Use of the native language in class

Please insist that your students speak English in class, even to each other. Unfortunately, this is the only English practice some students get, so we should ensure they have as much exposure to the language as possible. If someone is truly stuck, the native language may be used – briefly! – to get past that point and then move on in English.

If you feel it is necessary to separate students who insist on chatting in the native language during class in order to help them and the other students learn, then you should do so.

Course completion information

Several students have told me their Basic English 4 and 5 instructors last term told them they passed the class (before we have had a chance to score the tests). Please do not do this. If it turns out that the student did not pass, it causes additional disappointment to the student and damages the instructor’s credibility.

Basic English 6

The basic purpose of this course is:
a. to help students improve their English grammar in speaking and writing.
b. to teach students how to be more comfortable with the basic use of the computer.
c. to prepare the students for the COMPASS/ESL test (a computer-based test), which they will need to take if they are going on to credit coursework.

Here is the basic week-by-week course structure. Please use this as a guideline, keeping in mind that your students may have need for additional focus on one area over another. Particularly since this is a pilot course, please keep me posted on things that do/don't work, good/bad ideas, etc., so we can improve the course.
