BASIC ENGLISH COURSE EVALUATION AUTUMN 2010

What did you like most (or not like) about the textbook, workbook and/or software?
This textbook is easily understandable and readable; it’s standard for our level of class.
Everything in the book helps us to write paragraphs.
The pronunciation is very clear.
I like the hearing parts, the voice is nice.
It helped with my English skills and my computer skills.
I would like to learn more about the software.
The software was bad.
I liked the workbook because it is fun.
Everything was clear and it has a little test every unit that helped me out.
Exercises and rules were good for us.
The book is easy to understand and the activities have easy instructions.
I didn’t like the textbook.
I was uncomfortable with the workbook because it doesn’t have the answers.
There are some interesting articles in the textbook.
I can buy easily and cheap.
I didn’t like the new textbook because there were not enough rules for writing and some rules were too easy for Level 7.
I didn’t like the book because it did not provide enough work space.
I hate that this textbook changes every semester. Please do not change every semester.
I didn’t like it when I went to go somewhere on the internet, I can’t use that.
We want more slang in the software.
I do not like the software because I do not know how to type.

What could we do to make the program better?
Keep the same teacher, she is a good teacher- every question that you have, she has an answer. She is patient and she is a really good person.
As far as I am concerned so far so good.
Just keep it going the way it is. I liked it. Thank you.
I think some students need more help, a tutor would be helpful.
If we do more exercise with worksheets, it would be much better for us.
I would like to have more class discussion with teachers and classmates.
More hours per week would be helpful.
I think more days.
Have more class time.
More exercises.
Focusing on grammar, reading, and writing will help us improve.
It seems to be good the way it is right now.
Explain to the students.
Give more than one book to search for information.
More practical writing, making correction will be more useful.
The program should stay the same.
We need more hours and exercises to make the program better.
We need more hours and more homework.
To make groups that work together.
In my opinion, I would like to say if it’s possible to change some of the textbook’s program and add valuable lessons that the students may obtain better writing skills. Moreover, I need to say something about the new book- the new book was an interesting one but it was not as much as we thought because some of the program was not helping us become better writers.
The program is good. Thank you.
By making sure that students need more supplies on school material and some other services.
There are days off and it is difficult to make up for the lost time and I wish that all students knew how to use the computer.
We want to have more class time.
More time.
“The time”- wished it was more than ten weeks.

Basic English 6 information

Basic English 6 is an interactive class, which means it takes place in a computer lab. You and the students will need to log in to the computers using the standard Novell process.

[This does not mean that the students should just use the computer to learn. One way that works very well is to have a lecture and/or other activities about the topic(s) of the day, then spend some time with computer-based activities. Computer activities should also be assigned as homework.]

Each student will buy an access code at the bookstore for "Fundamentals of English Grammar". The website is www.azarinteractive.com.

Each of you has an instructor code. I recommend you spend a little time getting to know the site and its features before you start the class.

When you enter the code for the first time, you will be prompted to change it to your own preferred password.

By registering the above access code, you will gain instructor access to the follow product:
* Fundamentals of English Grammar Interactive

Please note that as an instructor, you can see everything from the students’ point of view—just. Click “Go to Student View” at the top of the Teacher Home page.

To download the Quick Start manual, please click on this link:
http://pearsonsupport.helpserve.com/index.php?_m=downloads&_a=viewdownload&downloaditemid=91&nav=0,7,32

Elizabeth teaches the morning Basic English 6 classes and has a great success rate. I strongly recommend her as a resource. You may want to observe one or two of her classes (and/or spend some time talking to her) about how she uses the computers as a tool in the classroom.

Most of the first day will probably be spent in housekeeping duties, including the background information forms, reviewing the policies/procedures handouts and helping the students learn how to find their Novell logons and start to navigate the site.

Here is a guide to helping the student find their Novell logons and passwords: http://lang-inst.blogspot.com/2009/11/preparing-for-be6.html

LI Update - September 25, 2010

Language Institute Update – September 25, 2010

Cancellations? The first round of cancellations for low enrollment was at the end of this past week. The second (FINAL) cancellations will be done at the end of the first week (if necessary). If your class is canceled after the term begins, you will be paid for any scheduled hours taught before cancellation.

Please review this important information; there have been some changes.

Policies/procedures handout: This handout has been revised. If you still have copies of the pink version, please dispose of them in the recycle bin. The new policies/procedures handouts are on purple paper and are in the document bin across from the mailboxes. Please take what you need so that each student has one (including all late adds). It is very important that you take time on the first day to go through each item on this handout and answer any questions the students might have.

Background Information form: These have also been revised. If you have copies of the old version, please dispose of them in the recycle bin. The revised forms are in the document bin across from the mailboxes. Please take what you need so that each student has one to complete (including all late adds). Please be sure that all students complete one of these and turn them in to me as soon as possible.

Basic Spanish instructors: Your background information forms are slightly different from the Basic English forms; they will be in your mailboxes.

Course syllabus: Class syllabi will be in the milk crate across the mailboxes. Please take what you need so that each student has one (including all late adds). Explain to the students that this is an expectation or guide for the term, but the actual items completed from the syllabus will depend in large part on the specific needs of the students. Therefore, slightly more or less information will probably be covered than what is on the syllabus.

Attendance: You will receive your first rosters by e-mail by the end of the day on Monday. Be sure to send me your class attendance information at the end of each week and check the updated rosters for accuracy. Let me know whenever there is a student in your class who is not on your roster so we can follow up on his/her registration.

CSCC e-mail: Your CSCC e-mail account will be used for sending your rosters and other College information. If you do not have an active CSCC e-mail account currently, please contact the IT Help Desk at 287-5050 (or helpdesk@cscc.edu) to get it activated. Please let me know when that has been done.

Computer access: When you log into the instructor computers in each classroom, you will need to enter your username as follows: .username.employee (NOTE the . before and after the username.) For example, if your username were rzelazny, you would enter .rzelazny.employee, and then your password in the password field. This may not work if your CSCC e-mail account has not been activated.

Late adds: As always, you will probably see a number of students add your class within the first two weeks. While we strongly encourage students to register before the beginning of the term, the reality is that this does not always happen. I will send you updated rosters a couple of times throughout the first two weeks before the last day for adding, which is the end of the second week.

Rooms: Please DO NOT change rooms on your own. If you find you have a need for a different classroom for some reason, let me know and I will see what is available.

Classroom furniture: Just a reminder — don't move classroom furniture out of the room. If you have more students than chairs, let me know and I will see what I can do about getting your room changed.

Mailboxes: Each of you has a mailbox; these can be found outside my office. Please check your mailbox regularly. Returning instructors: Please note that the mailboxes have been reordered. They are now in alphabetical order by last name

Access to the office suite during non-business hours: For those of you teaching evening or weekend classes, you will be able to access our office suite during these times by the end of the first week of classes, using your CSCC ID card as a swipe card. If the electronic access for the suite (or for your computer lab) doesn’t work, please call Public Safety at 287–2525 (2525 from a campus phone

Duplication: There is a new copy machine in Room 1098. Currently no code is needed to use the machine; this is expected to change soon. I’ll update you as soon as there is more news.

In order to save money and to have the machine for as many people as possible, please limit your duplication at the walk-up copier in 1098. Plan your duplication needs as much as possible and bring larger jobs to me to I can send them to Duplication. You should bring any needed copy jobs to me three business days before you need the copies

Supplies: Whenever you notice that we are getting low on something (handouts, dry-erase markers, etc.) please let me know so I can re-order them. And PLEASE do not put empty dry-erase marker boxes back in the cabinet.

If there is something in particular you would like to have for your class, please let me know. If it is within my power (and our budget), I will order it for use in the classroom

Letters of Agreement and time cards: Letters of Agreement (LOA) will be generated for all confirmed classes at the end of the first week (after final cancellations are done). Remember that payment is ALWAYS generated by means of time cards or electronic time entry (as applicable). You will not be paid if you do not submit your time as directed

By now you all should have received a copy of the Language Institute Employee Handbook for 2010–2011. This will give you information about pay periods, time submission, important contact information, etc. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

Time cards and electronic time entry: New instructors – until you are set up on the electronic time entry system, you will need to submit a paper time card. They are available in the document holder across from the mailboxes. Due dates for time cards are shown in the calendar of events below (and in the employee handbook.

I came across this nifty web site the other day and thought I’d share it with you:
http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar.
It has activities, quizzes and more, and is useful both for students and instructors.

Insofar as possible, please allow them sufficient privacy so that they can provide their true opinions and comments about the class. If possible, have another instructor assist your students while you do the same for that instructor’s class. (Thank you to Tafsir for this great idea!)

Labels. Your packets also contain labels for the students to use on their tests or answer sheets. Please have them use these. It makes it much easier for us to identify a test as belonging to a particular student in a particular class.
If you have a student who is in your class but does not have a label, go ahead and let the student take the test. Registration will be re-checked when final grades are entered. Please be sure that the student puts his name, CougarID number and course on the test or Scantron sheet.

Tests.
  • Basic English 1, Basic English 2, Basic English 3, Basic English 7. Students will write on the tests, not a separate answer sheet.
  • Basic Communication. You should fill out the assessment sheet for each student.
  • Basic Reading 1. You should give the Reading section (pages 1 – 19) of the TABE (9E). Students will mark their answers on Scantron sheets.
  • Other Basic English classes. Tests are in your packets. Students will mark their answers on Scantron sheets. NOTE for Basic English 6: These tests go beyond 50 questions, but the Scantron sheets have only 50 spaces. Therefore, you will need to use two Scantron sheets per student: #1 - #50 will be on the first Scantron sheet, and #50 through the end of the test will be on the second. Be sure that students write their names on the second sheet.
ALL – Please drop off the completed tests to me right away so we can get the results to the students without delay.

Scantron notes
  • Scantron answer sheets must be completed using #2 pencil. The scoring machine will not read ink. Be sure your students know about this ahead of time so they bring pencils with them to the test. Before the test begins, show the students how to correctly mark their choices so the machine will read them.
  • For those tests with Scantron answer sheets, students should not write in the test booklets – only on the answer sheets.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Basic English course name change

Basic Writing 1 will become Basic English 7 as of Summer Quarter 2010.

Why are we doing this?
In order for Basic English students to take the COMPASS/ESL test in the Testing Center, they need to have successfully completed both Basic English 6 and Basic Writing 1. Because Basic Writing 1 has a different name and is not clearly a part of the numbered Basic English series, many students have not clearly understood the requirement and have become confused. Further, a number of students who have taken the COMPASS/ESL test without completing the writing class have not been successful, and have needed to return to complete the Basic English series.
We hope that this change will make it easier to understand the necessity of completing the Basic English series before proceeding to the COMPASS/ESL test, so our students will have a smooth and successful transition to credit coursework.

When will the change take place?
The new course is already set up in Colleague for Summer quarter registration.

What is the course number?
The course number for Basic English 7 is LILNG-710.

What materials will be used?
There will be no change in curriculum or materials. The current Basic Writing text - Ready to Write 1 - will continue to be used.

Currently, students can take Basic English 6 and Basic Writing 1 at the same time if they want. Will this change?
No, there will not be a change. If a student wishes to take BE6 and BE7 at the same time, that will be fine.

Will there be a change in the Basic English Placement Test to accommodate this new level in the Basic English series?
Yes, there will, although it hasn't been done yet.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Electronic time entry process change

In order to ensure that time reporting is done accurately, we will need to add an extra step in the process of electronic time entry. PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY!!

Here’s the situation —
  • I keep a spreadsheet with the number of hours each instructor is scheduled to teach in a given pay period. This spreadsheet is available for Nancy to see to use as a guide when she goes in to approve time entries.
  • I try very hard to make all the needed changes that come up — illness, car problems, snow days, make-up days, etc., etc. Sometimes I miss something. And sometimes an instructor makes a time entry error. Therefore, there are times when the hours on my spreadsheet don’t match the hours that an instructor has entered.
  • It’s not always possible for Nancy to contact me to find out which number (mine or the instructor’s) is the correct one — and often there’s a very short window for her to approve the entries before the Payroll deadline. If there’s a discrepancy, there are only two options: (a) Approve the entry, which may mean the instructor will be underpaid (or overpaid) and not know it; or (b) Reject the entry, leaving the instructor to fill out a paper time card, and risk not being paid for the time until the following time period.
  • So that we can be sure instructors are being paid correctly AND so I can keep track of expenses, we need an improvement in the process. I sincerely hope the following change will remedy the situation.

Here’s the new process —
  • About five days before the end of each pay period, I’ll send each instructor an e-mail with a screen shot of the days and number of hours for that instructor from my spreadsheet. This is the spreadsheet that Nancy will use to verify that the time entered is correct.
  • If everything is correct, just let me know and then enter your time as usual. Nancy will then know it’s correct and be able to approve it.
  • If there is an error, let me know right away so I can update the spreadsheet before you enter your time.
  • If I don’t hear from you one way or the other by the time entry deadline, I will assume that my spreadsheet is correct. At that point, if there is a discrepancy between what you have entered and what is on my spreadsheet, Nancy will reject the time entry. You will then need to complete a paper time card in order to be paid for that time period. PLEASE NOTE that once the electronic time entry deadline has passed, there is a good chance that a paper time card will not be processed by Payroll in time for the next pay, which means your pay would be delayed until the following pay period.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to let me know. Thank you for your help as we work to improve processes and ensure accuracy in tracking expenses.

Testing with Scantrons

All classes except Basic English 1, Basic English 2 and Basic English for Business will use Scantrons in the final tests. Here are some important notes about testing with Scantron sheets.

  • Let students know to come prepared for the test with two sharpened #2 pencils (or mechanical #2 pencils). They will need these to complete the tests.
  • Be sure that students use #2 pencils to complete the Scantron forms.
  • Students should not write in the test booklets.
  • Give an example on the board of how to fill in the answer blanks correctly. Blanks should be filled in completely and neatly (not circled or marked with an X). Erasures should be clean and neat.
  • If name labels are not provided (or if two Scantrons are needed), be sure students complete the information box on the Scantron with first name, last name, CougarID number and the course name.
  • If there are more than 50 questions on the test, each student will need to use two Scantron sheets. #1 on the second Scantron sheet will correspond with question #51, #2 with question #52, and so on.
  • If two Scantrons are needed for each for each student, do not staple the Scantrons together before turning them in.
  • Turn in the completed Scantrons and test booklets right away after the tests are over so we can have the scores available for the students as soon as possible.

Photocopies

Please have good judgment and consideration of others in the use of the walk-up photocopier. Don’t make a lot of copies at one time. It’s much more efficient to send large copy jobs to Duplication. The turnaround time is usually under three business days. (Plan ahead!) Bring copy jobs to me and I’ll get them sent over to Duplication.
Also, yesterday morning an instructor made nearly 200 copies at one time on the walk-up copier, which prevented other people from using it. Please keep in mind that many other people (instructors, staff and administrators) need to use the machine as well – as a copier, a scanner and a network printer. Thank you!

Electronic time entry note

I strongly recommend that you enter your time before the due date. If you enter your time on the last possible day for entry and if there is an error or a question, your time card will be rejected, and there won’t be time for you to make the correction electronically. You will need to complete a paper time card; if you turn in the paper card more than one day after the electronic deadline, you won’t be able to be paid for the time until the next pay period.

Entering time through CougarWeb

If you need to submit your time electronically through CougarWeb, please review these instructions.

From the main CSCC web page, choose CougarWeb from the Student QuickLinks drop-down menu.

Select CougarWeb for Employees.

Log in at the prompt using your Novell username and password.

Click on Time Entry.

Enter your time in and time out each day for the Basic English course(s) you teach.
Be sure to include AM or PM, as appropriate.

DO NOT include any time for courses funded by grants or contracts; hours for these courses must be submitted on a paper time card.

You may do this each day or once at the end of the time period. The time will not be reported until you click the box at the bottom indicating your electronic signature.
NOTE: Once you click this box and then click “Submit”, you will not be able to make any more changes to your time entry.

Electronic time entry is due by the day after the last day of the time period. For example, for time recorded between October 1 and October 15, time reporting is due by October 16.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

English for Success - On campus program

Summary from Anna-Marie:

I want to offer you some insight on the English for Success program.  I am so delighted with the progress that we have made with the program.  It is tremendous and exciting to say the least.

When the program first started it was a hard road to hoe.  The student body was not receptive to our venue.  They fought us tooth and nail and did not show much academic or social progress.  Their attendance was spotty and their negative attitudes could be measured with a stick.

Now the program is rocking.  It is so incredible to see the meshing of cultures and learning.  We recently took a classroom expedition to a restaurant.  It was to expose the students to assimilation and language immersion in action.  They had a wonderful time.  To see the growth was tremendous.  When we first started working on assimilation, the resistance was overwhelming.  The students did not want to embrace the American customs of interaction and etiquette, timeliness, or work ethics.  Well, let me tell you all were embraced at our outing.  The students mixed well with one another and were communicating cross-culturally with ease.  The rule was spoken English only.  The Somali, Chinese and the Arabic students were speaking and laughing like lifelong friends.  No pressures, no apprehensions – just plain table talk and fun.  Table manners, timeliness – start and end by the agreed upon time – and respect for the employees of the establishment – how business works, etc. were discussed and viewed.

It was so gratifying to see the hard work of each student put into action.  We went to the Global Mall after lunch and the intermingling continued with complete success.  The students put their work and marketing skills to use.  They were introducing non-African shoppers to the merchandise and the customs of the merchants.  To see them explain, embrace and challenge one another was really great.

Gone were the petty arguments over supremacy by one or the other.  Just simple explanation, question and answer amongst classmates.  Eureka! we did it!!!!!
