Basic English 6 information

Basic English 6 is an interactive class, which means it takes place in a computer lab. You and the students will need to log in to the computers using the standard Novell process.

[This does not mean that the students should just use the computer to learn. One way that works very well is to have a lecture and/or other activities about the topic(s) of the day, then spend some time with computer-based activities. Computer activities should also be assigned as homework.]

Each student will buy an access code at the bookstore for "Fundamentals of English Grammar". The website is www.azarinteractive.com.

Each of you has an instructor code. I recommend you spend a little time getting to know the site and its features before you start the class.

When you enter the code for the first time, you will be prompted to change it to your own preferred password.

Elizabeth teaches the morning Basic English 6 classes and has a great success rate. I strongly recommend her as a resource. You may want to observe one or two of her classes (and/or spend some time talking to her) about how she uses the computers as a tool in the classroom.

Most of the first day will probably be spent in housekeeping duties, including the background information forms, reviewing the policies/procedures handouts and helping the students learn how to find their Novell logons and start to navigate the site.

Language Institute Update – September 25, 2010

Cancellations? The first round of cancellations for low enrollment was at the end of this past week. The second (FINAL) cancellations will be done at the end of the first week (if necessary). If your class is canceled after the term begins, you will be paid for any scheduled hours taught before cancellation.

Please review this important information; there have been some changes.

Policies/procedures handout: This handout has been revised. If you still have copies of the pink version, please dispose of them in the recycle bin. The new policies/procedures handouts are on purple paper and are in the document bin across from the mailboxes. Please take what you need so that each student has one (including all late adds). It is very important that you take time on the first day to go through each item on this handout and answer any questions the students might have.

Background Information form: These have also been revised. If you have copies of the old version, please dispose of them in the recycle bin. The revised forms are in the document bin across from the mailboxes. Please take what you need so that each student has one to complete (including all late adds). Please be sure that all students complete one of these and turn them in to me as soon as possible.

Basic Spanish instructors: Your background information forms are slightly different from the Basic English forms; they will be in your mailboxes.

Course syllabus: Class syllabi will be in the milk crate across the mailboxes. Please take what you need so that each student has one (including all late adds). Explain to the students that this is an expectation or guide for the term, but the actual items completed from the syllabus will depend in large part on the specific needs of the students. Therefore, slightly more or less information will probably be covered than what is on the syllabus.

Attendance: You will receive your first rosters by e-mail by the end of the day on Monday. Be sure to send me your class attendance information at the end of each week and check the updated rosters for accuracy. Let me know whenever there is a student in your class who is not on your roster so we can follow up on his/her registration.

CSCC e-mail: Your CSCC e-mail account will be used for sending your rosters and other College information. If you do not have an active CSCC e-mail account currently, please contact the IT Help Desk at 287-5050 (or helpdesk@cscc.edu) to get it activated. Please let me know when that has been done.

Computer access: When you log into the instructor computers in each classroom, you will need to enter your username as follows: .username.employee (NOTE the . before and after the username.) For example, if your username were rzelazny, you would enter .rzelazny.employee, and then your password in the password field. This may not work if your CSCC e-mail account has not been activated.

Late adds: As always, you will probably see a number of students add your class within the first two weeks. While we strongly encourage students to register before the beginning of the term, the reality is that this does not always happen. I will send you updated rosters a couple of times throughout the first two weeks before the last day for adding, which is the end of the second week.

Rooms: Please DO NOT change rooms on your own. If you find you have a need for a different classroom for some reason, let me know and I will see what is available.

Classroom furniture: Just a reminder — don't move classroom furniture out of the room. If you have more students than chairs, let me know and I will see what I can do about getting your room changed.

Mailboxes: Each of you has a mailbox; these can be found outside my office. Please check your mailbox regularly. Returning instructors: Please note that the mailboxes have been reordered. They are now in alphabetical order by last name

Access to the office suite during non-business hours: For those of you teaching evening or weekend classes, you will be able to access our office suite during these times by the end of the first week of classes, using your CSCC ID card as a swipe card. If the electronic access for the suite (or for your computer lab) doesn’t work, please call Public Safety at 287–2525 (2525 from a campus phone

Duplication: There is a new copy machine in Room 1098. Currently no code is needed to use the machine; this is expected to change soon. I’ll update you as soon as there is more news.

In order to save money and to have the machine for as many people as possible, please limit your duplication at the walk-up copier in 1098. Plan your duplication needs as much as possible and bring larger jobs to me to I can send them to Duplication. You should bring any needed copy jobs to me three business days before you need the copies

Supplies: Whenever you notice that we are getting low on something (handouts, dry-erase markers, etc.) please let me know so I can re-order them. And PLEASE do not put empty dry-erase marker boxes back in the cabinet.

If there is something in particular you would like to have for your class, please let me know. If it is within my power (and our budget), I will order it for use in the classroom

Letters of Agreement and time cards: Letters of Agreement (LOA) will be generated for all confirmed classes at the end of the first week (after final cancellations are done). Remember that payment is ALWAYS generated by means of time cards or electronic time entry (as applicable). You will not be paid if you do not submit your time as directed

By now you all should have received a copy of the Language Institute Employee Handbook for 2010–2011. This will give you information about pay periods, time submission, important contact information, etc. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

Time cards and electronic time entry: New instructors – until you are set up on the electronic time entry system, you will need to submit a paper time card. They are available in the document holder across from the mailboxes. Due dates for time cards are shown in the calendar of events below (and in the employee handbook.
