Basic English Placement Test (BEPT). The BEPT has been revised again. The new version (version 10!) includes a listening section. It is hoped that this will help us more accurately place students into the appropriate levels. The new version will be implemented sometime in September.
Course evaluation forms are in your mailboxes. Please note the instructions on the envelopes. Thank you!
Basic English 3 test. The BE3 test has been revised again and is over at Duplication. Thanks to Marian for noticing a serious problem with the test!
PrepLink Schoolhouse program. As we come to the end of the PrepLink Schoolhouse program (funded through a grant from University of Pittsburgh Medical Center [UPMC]), I would like to express my thanks to Marian and Patricia for their hard work in translating the curriculum (into Somali and Spanish, respectively) and for presenting the Emergency Planning/ Community Resilience curriculum this summer.
I received this comment from the coordinator of the program at UPMC: “I think you already know how impressed we have been with your involvement and what you have been able to accomplish. We are very grateful you were able to be involved with the project this year. You’ve produced a product that is not only of value to Columbus area residents -- but to hopefully many other citizens in other regions.”
And from the local office of the Department of Homeland Security: “This is wonderful indeed and we’re proud of CSCC for the great work.”
Thank you, ladies!!
Storage in Room 1107. Some of you have items stored in the overhead cubbies in the instructor area near my office. Due to a staffing increase in the ESL Afterschool Communities program, we will need to shift some of the storage assignments. If you have items stored, please be sure I have your key before you leave for break so we can reassign storage space during the break. Thank you!

Important testing notes
- Scantron answer sheets must be completed using #2 pencil. The scoring machine will not read ink. Be sure to show the students how to correctly mark their choices so the machine will read them.
- For those tests with Scantron answer sheets, students should not write in the test booklets – only on the answer sheets.
- Be sure that students complete their Scantron sheets with their names, CougarID and course level. (Date and time are also helpful, but not as crucial.) If they are using the TABE, have them write the test type (9E or 10E). This will help ensure we score them using the correct key.
SUBJECT _Basic English 4 9E____________
DATE _9/5/09____________ HOUR _1:00 p.m._____
- Basic English 2, 3 and 6 -- Test booklets and Scantron answer sheets will be left in your mailboxes before the last week of classes.
- Basic Communication – Assessment sheets will be left in your mailbox before the last week of classes.
- TABE kits should be picked up in my office before the test. Be sure to return the test kits promptly after the test so the next person can use it. Each kit contains test booklets, Scantron answer sheets and a small pack of pencils (in case there are students who forget theirs).
- Answer sheets should be returned to me in the envelopes provided so we can keep them sorted by course level and section.

LI Update - August 11, 2009
- Electronic time entry for the period of 8/1 – 8/15 is due on Saturday, 8/15.
- Completed time cards for the period of 8/1 – 8/15 are due to me on Wednesday, 8/12.
Pay increase. Just a reminder that as of 8/1, the hourly rate for noncredit instructors has been increased to $22.35/hr. This will not be reflected on your pay of 8/15, as that pay covers the period of 7/16 – 7/31. You should see the increase on the pay of 8/31. If you do not, please let me know right away so we can have the situation corrected.
Final tests updated. The final tests for Basic English 3 and Basic English 6 have been updated so that answers can be marked on Scantron sheets instead of in the test booklet. This will have three advantages:
- Scoring of tests can be done much more quickly and efficiently with the Scantron machine.
- Because of this, students will be able to have their results sooner.
- Because test booklets will not be marked, we will be able to use them more than once, which will save paper (and the costs of duplication!).
Observations. Once again I will be coming around to do brief in-class observations as my schedule permits, so don’t be surprised if you see me slip into the back of your class for a while!
